NOPE! This may come as a surprise to you, as I'm sure you've been told these are "effective".
Well, there's a lot of information to the contrary.
Drunk Driving Checkpoints are authorized in only 38 out of 50 US States and the District of Columbia. The US Supreme Court has upheld several cases stating the use of Drunk Driving Checkpoints does not violate either Probable Cause or Unreasonable Search and Seizure clauses in the 4th Amendment. It turns out only a few states (13 as estimated by GHSA [2014b]) actually utilize them due to lack of police officers and funding. From this information, you can already see the issue; the obvious hypocrisy of arbitrarily stopping people violates the 4th Amendment. We don't stop people randomly to see if they've got any illegal guns in their vehicles or any stolen merchandise. Only Drunk Drivers are worthy of this hateful policing. Depending on jurisdiction, vehicles may be stopped even if they show no signs of Drunk Driving.
How many people actually get arrested for DUI at a drunk driving checkpoint? A study of a DUI checkpoint in Indiana found that less than 1% of those stopped were arrested for DUI. Considering the average cost of running a DUI checkpoint and having about 5-10 police officers staffing it can cost a police force about $5,000 for several hours, does this cost actually accrue benefit? Of course not! Less than 10 citations and arrests, often which have nothing to do with drunk driving to begin with at one of these isn't worth it! It's just another way for prosecutors and corrupt law enforcement agencies to pretend like they are actively doing things with your money. They're actually using your money to buy MRAP's and defend themselves from police brutality cases
Why should law enforcement agencies prop up intimidating, inefficient and obsolete checkpoints? Why should they take your money to do this? Why should they even persecute Drunk Drivers to this degree? Because of decades of propaganda from mothers, zealots and politicians, that's why. If you've ever had a few beers before you got behind the wheel, or even while you are behind the wheel, this tyrannical practice very well may be levied against you!
If you or someone you know has been stopped, harassed and even arrested at one of these unconstitutional checkpoints, fear not! We are looking to form local chapters to protest these wastes of public funds!
